Neurological Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation

MaxIndependence has experience in working with a range of client groups who may benefit from Occupational Therapy Intervention. These conditions include, amongst others:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Strokes (CVA)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
  • Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

Insult or injury to the brain, no matter the cause, may result in physical, cognitive, sensory, perceptual, interpersonal, intrapersonal and/or behavioural impairments. Difficulties in any, or all of these areas, can have a detrimental effect on a person’s ability to be independent, or even participate in activities of daily living. It can also have an enormous impact on the lives of family, friends and carers of the affected individual. MaxIndependence’s Occupational Therapists aim to minimise the effect of the brain injury on the client’s life through a mixture of graded rehabilitation and assessment for, and provision of, adaptive equipment.

MaxIndependence will undertake a comprehensive holistic assessment with the client (and family/carers as appropriate) to identify specific aims for intervention. Intervention will be delivered in a timely and cost effective manner, and will be regularly reviewed.

  • Assessment would include the the following areas: motor/physical impairments, cognitive impairments, sensory impairments, perceptual impairments, behavioural difficulties. An observation/assessment about the impact of the client’s environment and the effect the impairments may have on functional activity within the areas of interpersonal, intrapersonal, selfcare and productivity will be assessed.

  • Aims of Intervention are ‘client centred’ in that, the client identifies what he/she would like to work to achieve, with guidance and assistance as required by Therapists.

  • Intervention provided will be evidence based, delivered in the most appropriate location, over a specified period of time, appropriate to the goal and client’s progress, and regularly reviewed. Intervention may take the form of:
    • Impairment based work, targeting specific skills that are then generalisable to functional tasks i.e. improving focussed attention/reduction of tone in upper limb.
    • Functional approach to address activities of daily living skills i.e. personal care training/travel training.
    • Adaptation of environment or grading of functional task.
    • Assessment for and provision of adaptive aids and equipment, including thermoplastic splinting.
    • Support and education for family/carers to maximise clients engagement.

  • Review through regular goal setting, review and evaluation will ensure that intervention can be monitored/adapted to ensure that the client remains on target to achieve their aims.
